Where are the goods going?

As on the invoice, bill of supply or delivery challan, GST included.

Why are the goods moving?

How are they carried?

Pick one only if it applies; most shipments are none of these.

Is the sender registered under GST?

Do you need an e-way bill?

Fill in the shipment above and the answer appears here.

How long is it valid?

The portal fills the PIN-to-PIN distance and lets you enter up to 10% more; same-PIN movements are capped at 100 km (300 km for line sales); for imports and exports only the distance inside India counts. Up to 4,000 km.

The portal refuses a document more than 180 days old.

Enter the distance to see the expiry.

How the rules work

  • Between states, every registered person who moves goods worth more than ₹50,000 (GST included) must generate an e-way bill before the movement starts, whether for a sale, for another reason, or for a purchase from an unregistered person (Rule 138(1)).
  • Within a state each government sets its own limit and exceptions under its SGST rules: ₹50,000 in most states, ₹1 lakh in several, a list of goods in a few, and city or job-work exemptions in some. The table below shows every state's rule and the day it was last checked.
  • Two cases need a bill whatever the value: goods sent to a job worker in another state, and handicrafts moved between states by an artisan exempt from registration.
  • No bill is ever needed for the exemptions in Rule 138(14): non-motorised transport, non-GST goods such as petrol and alcohol, GST-exempt goods, the Annexure goods (household LPG, PDS kerosene, currency, used household effects, gold and jewellery, coral), customs movements, Nepal and Bhutan transit, defence consignments, government goods by rail, empty containers, weighbridge trips up to 20 km, and empty LPG cylinders.
  • Validity is one day for every 200 km or part of it (20 km for over-dimensional cargo or a shipment with a ship leg), and each day ends at midnight. It can be extended within 8 hours either side of expiry; since 1 January 2025 never beyond 360 days from generation, and no bill can be made on a document more than 180 days old.
  • Since 1 November 2026 goods moved by metro railway follow the rail rules (Rule 138(2A) as amended by Notification 05/2026-Central Tax). The GST Council's October 2026 decision to limit roadside interceptions to specific intelligence is applied by instruction now and in law from 1 April 2027; the ₹50,000 limit, validity and penalties are unchanged.

What this checker can and cannot do

  • Tell you whether a given shipment needs an e-way bill under Rule 138 and your state's own notification, and who must generate it.
  • Work out the exact expiry and the extension window for a distance, the way the portal counts days.
  • Give you a calendar reminder for the extension window, and the list of documents the driver must carry.
  • Look up, generate, extend or cancel an actual e-way bill. That happens only on the government portal.
  • Replace a check of your state's latest notification for unusual goods. The state table shows the notification it relies on and the day it was checked.

Questions about e-way bills

When is an e-way bill required?

Whenever a registered person moves goods worth more than ₹50,000 between states, for any reason, and within a state whenever the state's own limit is crossed (₹50,000 in most states, ₹1 lakh in several). Job work between states and inter-state handicraft movements by exempt artisans need one at any value. The exemptions in Rule 138(14) override all of this.

What counts as the consignment value?

The value on the invoice, bill of supply or delivery challan under section 15, including CGST, SGST or UTGST, IGST and cess, and excluding exempt goods on a mixed invoice. Each document counts separately: several small consignments in one truck do not add up, because Rule 138(7) has never been brought into force.

How is the validity of an e-way bill calculated?

One day for the first 200 km and one more day for every further 200 km or part of it; 20 km per day for over-dimensional cargo or a multimodal shipment with a ship leg. The clock starts at the first Part B entry, and each day ends at midnight, so a one-day bill generated at 10:30 am on 3 November is valid until 11:59 pm on 4 November.

Can an e-way bill be extended after it expires?

Yes, within 8 hours after expiry, and from 8 hours before. The transporter carrying the goods (or the generator who entered the vehicle) extends it on the portal with the reason and the remaining distance. Since 1 January 2025 extensions cannot take a bill beyond 360 days from its generation.

Is an e-way bill needed within the same city or for a short distance?

The distance does not matter in the central rule; the value does. A few states exempt movement within a city or within notified areas, and the state table shows which. Separately, vehicle details may be left out for a leg of up to 50 km from the consignor to the transporter, or from the transporter to the consignee, within the state.

Which goods never need an e-way bill?

Non-GST goods (alcohol, petrol, diesel, crude, natural gas, ATF), GST-exempt goods, and the Annexure goods: household LPG, PDS kerosene, postal baggage, currency, used personal and household effects, coral, and gold, precious stones and jewellery except imitation jewellery. Gold within a state is the exception where the state has adopted Rule 138F, as Kerala has from ₹10 lakh.

What is the penalty for moving goods without an e-way bill?

Under section 129 the goods and vehicle can be detained and released on a penalty of 200% of the tax where the owner comes forward, or 50% of the value or 200% of the tax, whichever is higher, where the owner does not; for exempted goods 2% or 5% of the value, capped at ₹25,000. The vehicle itself is released on payment of the penalty or ₹1 lakh, whichever is less. From October 2026 interceptions are to be made only on specific intelligence authorised by a Joint Commissioner.

Is anything I enter stored?

No. The checker runs in your browser and nothing is sent to Bael Trade or anyone else. Your entries stay in this browser tab until you close it.

This checker applies Rule 138 of the CGST Rules and each state's notification as checked on 4 Nov 2026. It is a guide, not legal advice; for an unusual consignment confirm with your tax adviser or the state's latest notification.
